about

By the beginning of the 1980s, Kenya’s capital, Nairobi had long been a mecca for musicians from east and central Africa. The difficult political and economic situation in 1970s Zaire - now the Democratic Republic of the Congo - had meant that many bands from the east of the country had crossed into neighbouring Tanzania looking for opportunities. Tight government control on music industry in Tanzania at the time lead many of these Congolese artists as well as Tanzanians to head to nearby Nairobi where recording facilities were superior and there were more opportunities to earn a living playing live. These groups made Kenya their home and as such had a profound impact on the Kenyan music scene.

One of Nairobi’s many recording studios at that time was Audio Productions, run by producer Babu Shah. The Audio Productions stable had several imprints including APL, Hit Parade, Boxer, Pole Pole, Jasho, Mlima, Sound of Music, Wendo and Editions Suplov where a number of local acts, as well as Congolese and Tanzanian groups recorded. This collection brings together a raft of long out-of-print 45rpm singles recorded in the first half of the 1980s at Audio Productions, featuring cuts from the Kilimambogo Brothers and Kalambya Sisters from Kenya, Bana Sambo, Bana Likasi and Shika Shika from Zaire and Issa Juma & Super Wanyika from Tanzania. These songs reflect some of the main musical styles to be found in 1980s Kenya, including Kenya’s native uptempo benga, Tanzanian-influenced Swahili rumba and Congolese rumba. What all this wonderful music has in common is its joyful and uplifting guitar sound and No Wahala Sounds take great pleasure in making it available to the listening public again.
